My Inspiration
God Bless America! Every morning in Miz Lester 4th grade class of West Broad St. School in Savannah, Georgia, our voices would ring out proudly singing those patriotic words "God Bless America". Next would come the Negro national Anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing, till earth and Heaven Ring. Ring with the harmony of Liberty. Let it rejoicing rise high as the listening skys. Let us march on till victory is won."
I wonder if Miz Lester realized what a profound impact those two songs had on one of her pupils? "This is AMERICA," she would say, "you can do anything you want to, if you work hard and never give up." Even while sifting at my mothers feet listening to the radio, hearing a heart wrenching campaign speech from Mississippi Senator Bilbo saying a nigger ain't worth but $1.00 a day. I believe Miz Lester when she said listen to the voice of Marian Anderson, not Bilbo. In those racially divided Jim Crow days, she instilled in us a love of country and pride to have been born in the great state of Georgia. Almost anything that can be grown anywhere, can be grown in Georgia. Georgia has more counties that any other state except Texas.
Well Miz Lester, one of your pupils, took an old pair of denim jeans, cut it up, made a cap out of it, and put it on the head of three living presidents of the United States - Ford, Bush, and William Jefferson Clinton. Also including comedians Bob Hope and George Burns, congressmen, rock stars such as U2, Van Halen, and Rod Stewart, and magician David Copperfield and over three hundred others.
Thanks Miz Lester
